Agartala, May 13:
Newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Jahar Chakraborti was sworn in on Wednesday as the MLA from Dharmanagar during a ceremony held at the lobby of the Tripura Legislative Assembly.
The oath of office was administered by Assembly Speaker Ram Pada Jamatia in the presence of ministers, legislators, senior political leaders, and dignitaries from different parties.
Chakraborti secured a massive victory in the April 9 by-election, which was necessitated following the demise of former Speaker and Dharmanagar MLA Biswa Bandhu Sen. In the bypoll, he defeated CPI(M) candidate Amitabha Datta by a record margin, further strengthening the BJP’s position in the 60-member Assembly. With the victory, the BJP’s strength in the House has risen to 33 seats.
The oath-taking ceremony witnessed the presence of Chief Minister Manik Saha, Rajya Sabha MP and Pradesh BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee, Chief Whip Kalyani Roy, ministers, MLAs, and representatives from opposition parties including CPI(M) and Congress.
Speaking after taking oath, Jahar Chakraborti assured that development of Dharmanagar constituency would remain his top priority. He also emphasized maintaining law and order and ensuring welfare-oriented governance for the people of the constituency.
Chief Minister Manik Saha congratulated the newly sworn-in MLA and expressed confidence in his leadership abilities.
“Jahar Chakraborti has taken oath as a respected member of the Assembly. His dedication to public service and commitment to the welfare of people will make his new responsibility meaningful. I firmly believe that under his leadership, Dharmanagar’s development will reach new heights,” the Chief Minister said.
Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said Chakraborti had accepted the responsibility of fulfilling the aspirations of Dharmanagar’s people and carrying forward the unfinished vision of late Biswa Bandhu Sen.
Rajib Bhattacharjee also expressed confidence that the new MLA would work sincerely for the development and welfare of all sections of society in Dharmanagar.
