Tripura, 21 Sep 2025: On the eve of Mahalaya, a major drug bust was carried out at Dharmanagar Railway Station in Tripura’s North District. On Saturday night, the Government Railway Police (GRP) seized around 75 kg of dry ganja from the Deoghar Express, which had departed from Agartala for Deoghar. The estimated black-market value of the contraband is nearly ₹7.5 lakh.
According to sources, several canteen staff deployed on the train for catering services were secretly engaged in organized drug trafficking. Under the guise of serving food to passengers, they were smuggling ganja in bulk.
During the raid, police detained six temporary canteen workers of the railway department. Those arrested have been identified as Priyanshu Das Sheikh, Chandan Kumar Saha, Nitish Kumar, Foyez Ali, Mukesh Kumar, and Sunny Kumar. Most of them are residents of Bihar and West Bengal. The contraband was recovered from their bags and heavy luggage.
Dharmanagar GRP Officer-in-Charge, Uttam Kalai, confirmed that a case has been registered against the accused under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The accused will be produced before the court on Sunday. Police are also investigating the wider network involved in the racket.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the seized ganja consignment was collected from Agartala and was being transported to other states. The incident has sparked widespread concern in the area.
