Tripura, 26 August 2025: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched a series of coordinated raids across four locations in Tripura on Tuesday morning, targeting individuals in connection with ongoing investigations into financial irregularities, fraud, and illegal land dealings. The simultaneous searches have brought significant attention to the state’s crackdown on financial crimes.
The raids were carried out at the residences of four individuals in West Tripura and Sepahijala districts, with Central paramilitary forces providing security for the ED officials. The locations and individuals targeted in the operation include:
- Mihir Debnath‘s residence near Nabajagaran Sangha in Badharghat.
- The home of Smt. Mampi Ghosh and Shri Sawarup Banik in the AD Nagar area, near Basanti Club.
- The premises of Sh. Hardhan Baidya in Paschim Nalchar, Sepahijala district.
- The residence of Mr. Utpal Kumar Chowdhury in the Khayerpur area.
Sources suggest the raids are part of a broader investigation into multiple fraud cases and money laundering. While the ED has yet to release an official statement, reports indicate the searches are aimed at uncovering evidence related to assets disproportionate to known sources of income.
One of the individuals, Sawarup Banik, a retired employee of the Fire Service, is reportedly under scrutiny for allegedly accumulating significant wealth while serving as a manager for a private company. His brother, Somesh Banik, is a Tripura Civil Service (TCS) officer currently posted in the Bishalgarh sub-divisional magistrate’s office.
The operation has caused a stir in the state, with investigations expected to continue over the next few days. Authorities have indicated that more details will be shared upon the completion of the initial searches and examination of the seized documents and materials.
