Unakoti, Aug 20: A remarkable medical success was recorded at Unakoti District Hospital on August 16, when a baby boy was born free of HIV despite his mother being HIV-positive. The event, hailed as a milestone in modern medical care, awareness, and compassion, reflects the progress of Tripura’s healthcare system.
The mother, an 18-year-old resident of Laljuri village under Kumarghat subdivision, was diagnosed as HIV-positive during routine antenatal checkups. The news deeply worried her family, particularly regarding the child’s future. However, under the leadership of Medical Superintendent Dr. Rohan Pal, a dedicated team of doctors, nurses, and health workers extended full support to the young mother.
At 2:25 pm on August 16, under the supervision of gynecologist Dr. Sumit Das, assisted by nursing officers Amrita Sinha and Rahima Begum, the mother safely delivered a healthy male child weighing 2.9 kg. Following international medical guidelines, utmost precautions were taken during delivery to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
Post-delivery, the newborn was kept under close observation. Initial tests confirmed that the baby showed no signs of HIV infection. Both mother and child are currently in good health under medical supervision.
This case demonstrates that with awareness, timely medical intervention, and compassionate care, HIV infection need not be a barrier to a healthy and safe life. It also stands as a shining example of the dedication of doctors and health workers at Unakoti District Hospital, and a testament to the ongoing improvement in Tripura’s healthcare services.
The Health Department of Tripura shared this news in an official press release.
