Agartala, August 18: The North East Students’ Organization (NESO), along with its state affiliate, the Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF), staged a three-hour sit-in demonstration in front of the Circuit House in Agartala on Sunday, demanding immediate action against illegal immigrants in the region.
The protest was part of a coordinated agitation across all seven Northeastern states, following NESO’s decision to intensify its long-standing movement on the issue. TSF leaders said the objective of the demonstration was to press for detection and deportation of illegal immigrants who, they claimed, have been altering the demographic balance of the region for decades.

Speaking at the protest, TSF Vice President John Debbarma said:
“Illegal immigration is not new to us it has been an issue for more than 70 years. While evictions are taking place in Assam, Tripura has not witnessed any such steps. We urge the Tripura government to take immediate measures to deport illegal immigrants and coordinate with other Northeastern states so that those evicted elsewhere are not relocated here. Tripura must not become a dumping ground for illegal immigrants.”
The student leader further stressed that unchecked infiltration has changed Tripura’s population structure and warned that the situation would have serious implications ahead of the upcoming census and delimitation exercise.
NESO and TSF reiterated their demand for a comprehensive policy framework to ensure that the entire Northeastern region is safeguarded from the alleged impact of illegal migration.
