Tripura, 12 August 2025: Tension gripped Charilam on Tuesday afternoon after locals caught three youths with a container of brown sugar and suspected stolen goods near a petrol pump close to Charilam market. The trio, allegedly involved in frequent thefts to fund their drug habit, were handed over to Bishalgarh police after being beaten by enraged residents.
According to witnesses, the youths had been creating panic in the locality by stealing household items and engaging in antisocial activities. Acting on a tip-off, police reached the spot to find the suspects in public custody.
“They admitted to drug use but claimed they had quit. No drugs were found during the initial search. One of them owns a vehicle, but nothing suspicious was recovered from it. They say they deal in second-hand goods. Further verification is underway,” a police officer said.
Police added that seven thieves have been arrested in the Charilam area in recent days and are currently in judicial custody.
