Agartala, August 7, 2025: The primary goal of the present state government is to ensure the empowerment of every woman in Tripura. With this objective, the government is actively encouraging women across the state to engage more in handicrafts, handloom, and silk fabric production.
This message was emphasized today by Minister for Handloom, Handicrafts, and Sericulture Bikash Debbarma, during the inaugural ceremony of the 5-day-long Handloom Expo 2025, organized on the occasion of the 11th National Handloom Day at Urban Haat, Purbasha.
The Minister stated that the government will extend full support to strengthen the financial independence and self-reliance of women through these industries. He urged artisans to enhance the production of bamboo crafts, handwoven textiles, and silk fabrics, assuring them that the government will facilitate the sale of their finished products.
West Tripura Zilla Parishad’s Acting Sabhadhipati Biswajit Shil, present as a guest of honour, also addressed the gathering. He highlighted the importance of developing the handloom sector and called upon everyone to contribute to its growth.
The welcome address was delivered by Ajit Shukladas, Director of the Department of Handloom, Handicrafts, and Sericulture. The vote of thanks was presented by Arnab Choudhury, Deputy Director of the Weavers’ Service Centre.
As part of the event, awards were presented to the top three handloom weavers, three handicraft artisans, and three silk producers of the year. Minister Bikas Debbarma and other dignitaries handed over cheques to the winners — ₹10,000 for the first prize, ₹7,500 for the second, and ₹5,000 for the third in each category.
