Tripura, 24 Oct 2026: A one-day-old newborn baby boy was rescued from a jungle near Pecharthal Hospital in Kumarghat subdivision of Tripura’s Unakoti district on Friday night. The incident came to light after local residents heard a baby crying in the jungle beside the house of Samir Deb, near the Durga Mandap in Pecharthal market. The residents rushed to the spot and found the newborn, following which the police were informed.
With the assistance of Pecharthal Police and Fire Service personnel, the baby was rescued and taken to Pecharthal Hospital for medical attention. The incident has triggered widespread concern across Pecharthal and the Kumarghat subdivision.
According to the attending doctor, the newborn was found to be suffering from mild hypothermia, with the baby’s body temperature lower than normal. The hospital provided the necessary treatment, care and feeding arrangements. Following medical attention, the baby’s condition improved, and the infant was reported to be healthy.
On Saturday, the baby was handed over to the Unakoti District Child Protection Unit for further care and legal procedures.
Sagaradwip Malakar, Legal-cum-Professional Officer of the District Child Protection Unit, said the unit reached the spot after receiving information from Pecharthal Police Station. The newborn was taken into the unit’s custody in accordance with the prescribed legal procedures. The baby will remain under the unit’s care until the parents are traced or further decisions are taken by the competent authorities.
Malakar also appealed to the public not to spread rumours or believe unverified information regarding the incident. The administration has confirmed that the baby is safe and under official care.
The discovery of a newborn in the jungle has raised several questions about the circumstances surrounding the incident. However, the identity of the child’s parents and the reasons behind the baby being left at the spot remain unknown. Authorities are expected to follow the prescribed child protection procedures while efforts are made to establish the child’s parentage.
