Tripura, 7 Oct 2026: Ankit Kishore Sen, researcher at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) and an alumnus of NIT Agartala, has demonstrated a non-invasive, real-time approach for localizing active brain sources within 60 seconds using electroencephalography (EEG) signals recorded through sensors placed on the scalp.
The experimental demonstration shows that brain activity associated with human movement can be localized without surgery, highlighting potential avenues for future research and technology development in areas such as brain stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs).
The work was carried out as part of Sen’s MS (Research) thesis, titled “(Sub)Cortical Source Localization and Connectivity Analysis for Movement Related EEG,” under the supervision of Prof. Lalan Kumar at IIT Delhi.
A key feature of the research is its real-time demonstration. During the experiment, EEG signals were acquired using a 32-channel EEG system while a participant performed a 10-second right-hand biceps-curl movement. The Head Harmonics (H²)-based MUSIC technique then generated a real-time brain-source localization plot, demonstrating the feasibility of performing source localization during an experimental real-time setup.
The approach does not require a CT scan, MRI scan or surgical procedure, and does not rely on an AI model. Instead, EEG sensors are placed on the scalp, and the electrical signals recorded from the brain are computationally analysed to estimate the location of active neural sources.
Sen’s recent research has also been published through IEEE, focusing on source localization and functional connectivity analysis of human stop-signal tasks using sLORETA, as well as EEG-based cortical source localization for human stop-signal tasks using the Head Harmonics MUSIC method.
Beyond brain-computing research, Sen has developed more than 100 multilingual, voice-enabled educational tools within a single year, including several solutions described as India-first or world-first innovations. His work has also gained visibility through Google AI Search. He is additionally recognised for developing a multilingual, voice-enabled mathematics solver tool described as India’s first of its kind.
An alumnus of NIT Agartala and IIT Delhi, AK Sen has academic and professional interests spanning artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, signal processing, speech recognition, telecommunications, mathematical computing, brain computing and educational technology. He is also associated with RoboVaani, Bharati AI and SwasVaani as founder and director (CEO & CTO).
The demonstration represents a significant research achievement from a Tripura-origin researcher and highlights the potential of EEG-based computational techniques for advancing non-invasive brain research and future neurotechnology applications.
