Tripura, 05 Oct 2026: Tension erupted around the vote counting centre at Champahour in Khowai district’s Tulashikhar RD Block on Monday as police and security forces reportedly resorted to lathi-charge to control the situation. Several people were reportedly injured during the incident.
According to local sources, 57-year-old Motilal Karmakar, son of Biswa Karmakar and a resident of Lathibari, was seriously injured amid the unrest. He was taken to Khowai District Hospital in critical condition and was later referred to GBP Hospital in Agartala. Doctors at GBP Hospital said he was brought in dead.
Speaking to the media, Motilal Karmakar’s wife, Animala Debbarma Karmakar, alleged that her husband was beaten during the incident at Champahawar. She claimed that he had gone to the area to witness the ADC election vote counting and that he was associated with the Tipra Motha party.
According to his wife, Motilal was reportedly found unconscious after the incident and was taken to Khowai District Hospital. She alleged that she was later informed that he needed to be shifted to GBP Hospital. She has demanded an investigation and action against those responsible for her husband’s death.
However, the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and the cause of death have not yet been officially established.
A medical professional at GBP Hospital confirmed that Motilal Karmakar, a 57-year-old male patient, had been referred from Khowai District Hospital. The referral document reportedly mentioned “head trauma” and “head injury.” The doctor said that the patient was brought to GBP Hospital already dead and that arrangements had been made for a post-mortem examination.
The medical findings do not, at this stage, establish whether the injuries were caused by a police lathi-charge or by any other means. The exact cause and circumstances of Motilal Karmakar’s death are expected to become clearer after the post-mortem examination and further investigation.
Further details and the official statement from the administration are awaited.
