Agartala, October 4: An earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale jolted Tripura’s Dhalai district in the early hours of Sunday, with tremors felt in several areas but no immediate reports of casualties or damage, officials said.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 12:57:38 am. Its epicentre was located at latitude 23.757 degrees North and longitude 91.995 degrees East.
The quake had a depth of 30 kilometres, the NCS said in an update posted on its official X account.
The tremor was felt in parts of Dhalai, causing brief concern among residents. However, authorities said there were no reports of injuries, damage to houses or other structures, or disruption of essential services following the earthquake.
The district administration is monitoring the situation and gathering information from different areas to ascertain whether the tremor caused any impact, particularly in remote locations, officials said.
Residents have been advised to remain alert and follow safety precautions in case of aftershocks or further seismic activity.
The latest tremor comes amid continued seismic activity in the Northeast, one of the country’s seismically active regions.
The NCS, India’s nodal agency for earthquake monitoring, maintains a network of seismic stations and records tremors occurring across the country and neighbouring regions. It regularly releases information on the magnitude, epicentre and depth of earthquakes detected by its monitoring system.
Officials said there was no indication of significant damage from Sunday’s earthquake in the initial assessment.
The administration also urged residents to remain calm and rely on information issued by government agencies instead of unverified claims or messages circulating on social media.
Officials are continuing to monitor developments and will assess reports from affected areas.
The tremor subsided without any major incident being reported, bringing relief to residents who felt the shaking.
Authorities have also emphasised the importance of preparedness and awareness in earthquake-prone areas and advised people to follow established safety measures during any seismic event.
Tripura and other northeastern states have experienced earthquakes of varying magnitude in the past because of the region’s geological setting.
Further updates will be issued if any casualties, structural damage or other significant impact is reported, officials said.
