Agartala, September 22: A renewed road safety campaign in Tripura is seeking to promote safer driving practices and greater awareness among motorists and pedestrians, with authorities stressing collective responsibility to prevent accidents.
The West Tripura district administration and the Transport Department jointly held a District-Level Road Safety Awareness and Sensitisation Programme at the State Guest House, Sonar Tori, on Tuesday. Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury inaugurated the programme.
Addressing officials and participants, Chowdhury said enforcement of traffic regulations alone would not be sufficient to ensure road safety. He stressed the importance of responsible behaviour and greater sensitivity among all road users.
The minister urged motorists to comply with traffic rules and speed restrictions and to use helmets and seatbelts while travelling. He also appealed to drivers to stay away from alcohol before driving and remain mindful of pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.
Emphasising the importance of shared responsibility, Chowdhury said, “Alongside our own safety, we must value the lives of others,” while calling for responsible conduct from both motorists and pedestrians.
Officials from the police, district administration and Transport Department took part in the programme and discussed measures aimed at reducing road accidents, improving traffic safety and expanding public awareness initiatives.
The participants also discussed the risks posed by rash and reckless driving and the need to encourage safer habits among road users. Officials said sustained public participation and behavioural changes are essential to building a stronger road safety culture.
The programme concluded with a reaffirmation of the message, “Safe Roads, Safe Lives”, and a commitment to encourage responsible road use and safer mobility across Tripura.
