Agartala, September 20: Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) will admit 250 MBBS students annually from the 2026-27 academic session following approval for 100 additional seats, raising its existing intake from 150.
The expansion is expected to widen access to medical education for students in Tripura and the Northeast while adding capacity to the state’s medical education infrastructure.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha welcomed the decision and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for supporting the increase in MBBS seats at the institution.
In a social media post, Saha said the enhanced intake would provide more opportunities for students from Tripura and contribute to strengthening the state’s healthcare and medical education infrastructure.
AGMC had been admitting 150 MBBS students each year. With the latest approval, the institution will now have an annual intake of 250 students, creating 100 additional opportunities for aspiring medical professionals.
With the revised capacity, AGMC joins the group of established medical institutions across India that admit 250 MBBS students annually. Institutions with comparable intake capacities include Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, B.J. Medical College in Gujarat, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, SMS Medical College in Jaipur, Madras Medical College in Chennai and King George’s Medical University in Lucknow.
The increase in seats is part of the broader expansion of medical education capacity and healthcare infrastructure in the country. For Tripura, the additional seats are expected to further strengthen opportunities for students seeking medical education within the state and contribute to the growth of its healthcare ecosystem.
