Agartala, September 11: Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Saturday visited Maharajganj Bazar in Agartala and reviewed the functioning of the city’s busy marketplace, with officials briefing him on traffic, sanitation and infrastructure-related concerns.
During the visit, Saha inspected the fish market and other adjoining areas and interacted with traders, shoppers and residents. He gathered feedback on the difficulties encountered during daily commercial activities and assessed the existing facilities.
The Chief Minister paid particular attention to traffic congestion in and around the market. He reviewed the movement of goods vehicles and discussed the disruption caused by loading and unloading operations, which frequently affects the movement of pedestrians and other vehicles.
Saha asked the authorities to explore workable arrangements for regulating commercial vehicle movement without affecting normal trading activities. Measures to improve pedestrian access and reduce congestion during peak hours were also discussed.
The condition of sanitation facilities came under review as well. Saha stressed the importance of proper waste collection and disposal and called upon traders and visitors to contribute to keeping the market premises clean.
He said the administration and the people would have to work together to improve civic conditions at the marketplace. The concerns raised during the inspection, he added, would be examined in consultation with the departments concerned.
Saha said the government was considering steps to give Maharajganj Bazar a more organised and improved appearance, including upgrades to market infrastructure and better management of traffic and waste.
He emphasised that any redevelopment or improvement plan should take into account the requirements of both traders and consumers. The objective, he said, should be to create a market that is more convenient, hygienic and safer for the public while providing traders with improved working conditions.
The Chief Minister added that detailed discussions with the concerned authorities would follow to determine the measures that could be implemented and to address the issues in a phased manner.
