Agartala, September 9: A dedicated marketplace for vegetables produced by rural Self-Help Group members was opened at Dhajanagar Gram Panchayat under Tepania R.D. Block, marking a fresh effort to strengthen women-led livelihood activities and improve market access for local producers.
The Gomati Fresh Vegetable Mart was inaugurated by Gomati District Magistrate and Collector Rinku Lather. The initiative has been supported by the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM) and implemented through the Block Mission Management Unit (BMMU), Tepania.
The Natun Disha Cluster Level Federation (CLF) will oversee the operation of the mart, which has been established to provide SHG members with a more organised platform to sell vegetables cultivated by them.
The new outlet is expected to help producers overcome one of the major challenges faced by small-scale rural farmers — access to a dependable market. Instead of relying entirely on intermediaries or informal selling arrangements, SHG members will have a dedicated space to bring their produce directly to consumers.
Officials said the initiative could contribute to better income opportunities for rural women while encouraging them to take up agriculture and related activities as organised livelihood enterprises.
The mart is also expected to benefit local consumers by making locally grown vegetables more readily available. Residents can purchase fresh produce from nearby growers, creating a direct connection between rural producers and the community.
The initiative forms part of TRLM’s broader efforts to strengthen the economic activities of women associated with Self-Help Groups. Providing market linkages is considered an important step in enabling SHG members to turn small-scale production into sustainable income-generating ventures.
Management of the outlet by the Natun Disha CLF is also expected to give participating women practical exposure to running a collective enterprise. Responsibilities such as sales, inventory management, customer interaction and local marketing can provide valuable experience in managing a community-based business.
The project thus combines agricultural production with organised marketing, creating an avenue through which rural women can participate more actively in the local economy.
The launch of the Gomati Fresh Vegetable Mart is expected to strengthen the local supply chain by keeping more stages of production and marketing within the community. It could also encourage SHG members to increase vegetable cultivation in response to local demand.
The initiative represents an effort to move rural livelihood programmes beyond financial support and production activities by creating sustainable market opportunities for the products generated by SHG members.
With the new mart connecting local growers directly with consumers, the initiative is expected to support rural entrepreneurship, strengthen women-led enterprises and contribute to the economic activity of the surrounding area.
