Tripura, 06 Sep 2026: A woman was allegedly assaulted at her home in Nonjala village under Bishramganj Gram Panchayat after she refused to rent out a room to a local youth, triggering tension in the area.
According to allegations, the youth, identified as Sahid Mia, and his wife entered the house of Lakshmi Sarkar and allegedly assaulted her. During the incident, her shakha (traditional conch-shell bangle) was allegedly broken.
The incident reportedly took place after Lakshmi Sarkar and her husband, Tapan Paul, refused to rent a room in their house to Sahid Mia.
The matter was reportedly brought to the attention of Bishramganj Police Station and local community leaders. However, Lakshmi Sarkar’s side has alleged that no one from the local community came forward to help her.
Nonjala village is located just behind the offices of the Sepahijala Superintendent of Police and the District Magistrate. The village is predominantly inhabited by Muslim families, while Lakshmi Sarkar’s family is reportedly the only Hindu household in the village.
The incident has reportedly caused concern among residents of Nonjala village.
