Tripura, 03 August 2026: The Khowai Municipal Council and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today to introduce scientific processing, recycling and improved management of waste generated in Khowai town.
The project, valued at Rs 1.06 crore, is aimed at strengthening the municipality’s waste management system through scientific segregation, processing and recycling of reusable waste.
As part of the initiative, a cooperative has been formed involving 100 women from self-help groups (SHGs) in Khowai. The cooperative will be involved in waste segregation, processing and recycling activities under the project, creating new employment opportunities for the women.
According to Khowai Municipal Council Chairperson Debashish Nath Sharma, a project proposal focusing on scientific waste segregation, processing and recycling had earlier been submitted to ONGC. The proposal was subsequently accepted by the corporation.
Sharma said the initiative would help make waste management in Khowai more modern and effective while also creating livelihood opportunities for women associated with SHGs.
The MoU-signing ceremony was attended by ONGC CGM Amita Naik, Khowai Municipal Council Chairperson Debashish Nath Sharma, Khowai Sub-Divisional Magistrate Nirmal Kumar, along with other ONGC officials and representatives.
The initiative is expected to strengthen Khowai’s waste management infrastructure while promoting greater recycling and community participation in waste processing.
