Agartala: Sept 02: A 46-year-old cattle trader, Jalil Rahman, was allegedly beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of being a cattle thief in Bagber village under Kalyanpur Police Station, triggering widespread tension in the area.
Jalil Rahman, son of Habibur Rahman, was reportedly taking two cattle from a farmer’s house in the Bagber area early Wednesday morning. According to his brother, Jalil had purchased the cattle from the farmer the previous day, but the owner had not handed them over because it was Tuesday. Jalil allegedly went to collect the cattle before dawn to take them to the cattle market at Bagan Bazar.
The family claimed that around 4:00–4:30 am, some residents saw Jalil bringing the two cattle and allegedly attacked him, suspecting him of theft. He reportedly sustained serious injuries and fell to the ground. Despite his condition, Jalil allegedly managed to call his family and inform them about the incident. His wife and others were also allegedly attacked while heading to the spot.
Police from Kalyanpur Police Station rushed to the scene after receiving the information and took the injured Jalil to Kalyanpur Hospital. He was declared dead by the attending doctor, according to police.
However, questions have been raised over what happened to the cattle that were with Jalil, who they were handed over to and how their ownership was established. Police officials, including the Additional Superintendent of Police, reportedly could not provide clear answers on these issues.
Police said an investigation is underway and those responsible will be brought under the law. The incident has caused considerable concern across Kalyanpur.
