Tripura, 31 August 2026: A serious road accident involving a Maruti car and a tomtom occurred near Western Club on Akhaura Road in Agartala on Sunday morning, leaving three people seriously injured.
According to police, the accident took place at around 8:30 am on the road connecting Fire Service and Border Golchakkar. A white vehicle bearing registration number TR 01 CL 0297 collided head-on with a tomtom, TR 01 ER 2451, coming from the opposite direction.
The injured included the tomtom driver and a female passenger, along with another person. All three were rescued and rushed to GBP Hospital by Fire and Emergency Services personnel for treatment.
Local residents gathered at the accident site and blocked the road, demanding action against those responsible. Protesters alleged that a young woman was being taught how to drive the Maruti car on the busy Akhaura Road when the accident occurred. Some locals also alleged that the vehicle was connected to the family of a senior police officer. However, these allegations have not yet been independently verified by police.
Residents demanded that the police register a case and take action against the person responsible before the road blockade is withdrawn.
A protester claimed that he had video footage allegedly showing the woman learning to drive and demanded verification of the footage, the learner’s licence and other required procedures for driving instruction. He also alleged that the man accompanying the woman was driving under the influence of alcohol and called for a medical examination. These claims are also yet to be established officially.
Police officials said that, based on preliminary accounts from people present at the scene, the white car appears to have been driven by a woman. Police have detained a person and are examining CCTV footage and other videos recorded by eyewitnesses to establish exactly what happened.
The police officer said that since personnel were not present at the exact moment of the collision, no conclusion could yet be drawn regarding the position of either vehicle or whether any traffic-rule violation occurred. A detailed investigation is underway, and legal action will be taken against whoever is found responsible.
Senior police officials, including the Sadar SDPO, reached the spot to control the situation as tension continued among the protesters.
