Agartala, August 28: Women’s empowerment and development are not limited to the progress of an individual woman; they contribute to the development of families, society, the state and the country as a whole, said Tripura Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma.
Speaking during a discussion in the Tripura Legislative Assembly on a private member’s resolution brought by MLA Antara Deb Sarkar, the minister said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, various initiatives are being implemented to make women financially self-reliant.
The resolution, titled “The Government of Tripura should take appropriate steps to expand the Women Entrepreneur Development Scheme in the state with the objective of promoting women’s independence and improving family economies,” was unanimously adopted following the discussion.
Moving the resolution, MLA Antara Deb Sarkar spoke in favour of expanding initiatives for women entrepreneurs in the state.
Participating in the discussion, Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma said the state government is already implementing several schemes aimed at making women self-reliant through Self-Help Groups (SHGs). She highlighted initiatives ranging from livestock rearing to the “Drone Didi” programme, which she said are contributing to the socio-economic development of women.
The minister also stressed the importance of women’s empowerment in achieving the vision of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India).
Government Chief Whip and MLA Kalyani Saha Roy supported the resolution, stating that both the Central and state governments are implementing various programmes to make women economically independent.
She further said that 33 per cent reservation for women in government jobs has been provided to promote the economic empowerment of women in the state.
MLAs Gopal Chandra Roy, Ranjit Debbarma, Sudip Sarkar and Swapna Debbarma also participated in the discussion and expressed their support for the resolution.
