In a proud moment for Tripura’s education sector, Ranjan Debnath, Headmaster of PM SHRI Sabroom Girls Higher Secondary School in South Tripura, has been selected among 48 distinguished teachers from across the country for the National Teachers Award 2026.
Debnath’s selection has brought national recognition to Sabroom and highlighted the contribution of educators working in smaller towns and regions beyond major urban centres. His achievement is being seen as a significant honour for Tripura’s school education system and grassroots educators.
The prestigious National Teachers Award, instituted by the Ministry of Education, recognises teachers for their exceptional contribution to school education and their efforts to create a lasting impact on students. Debnath’s selection reflects the dedication of teachers working to improve learning outcomes and strengthen education at the grassroots level.
According to preliminary details available on his social media profile, Debnath completed his studies at Umakanta Academy and MBB College in Agartala before beginning his teaching career. His professional journey has now culminated in one of the country’s most significant recognitions for school teachers.
The awards will be presented by President Droupadi Murmu on September 5, Teachers’ Day, at a ceremony at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The event will also feature short documentaries highlighting the work and achievements of each award recipient.
The 2026 selection process was conducted through three stages — district, state and national — with candidates evaluated through a rigorous selection mechanism. This year, the awardees include 26 male and 22 female teachers representing 27 States, seven Union Territories and six Central Government organisations.
The Ministry of Education had invited online self-nominations from eligible teachers between June 15 and July 20 as part of efforts to ensure a transparent and inclusive process for identifying outstanding educators.
The award ceremony will be telecast live on Doordarshan and SWAYAM PRABHA channels. It will also be streamed through the Ministry’s webcast and official social media platforms.
For Sabroom and Tripura, Debnath’s selection represents more than an individual achievement. It stands as recognition of the commitment of teachers working at the grassroots and demonstrates that educators from smaller towns can earn national acclaim through dedication, innovation and sustained efforts to transform students’ lives.
