Agartala, 14 August 2026: History must not be forgotten, as forgetting the past can hinder the progress of the present and future, Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha said on Friday.
Addressing the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day and Har Ghar Tiranga programme at Rabindra Hall of Maharaja Bir Bikram College, the Chief Minister said the national flag carries a message and direction for the country’s journey forward. He stressed the need for students and young people to learn about and discuss the painful history of India’s Partition.
Dr. Saha said India was divided by exploiting religious sentiments, which created an atmosphere of communal division. The Partition led to severe social consequences, with people from different sections facing numerous challenges. He said the Remembrance Day holds immense significance in recalling the horrors of the social environment created by Partition.
The Chief Minister said the national flag is deeply associated with the patriotism and national pride of the people. Although the country faced exploitation and various challenges after Independence, the people’s love, respect and devotion towards the nation remained intact.
Millions of people were affected by the Partition, he said, adding that the nation must always come first and this sentiment should remain in the heart of every citizen.
Dr. Saha said Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign in 2022 to further strengthen patriotism and national pride among citizens. The initiative has generated a wave of patriotism among students, youth and people across the country, he said.
He further stated that the stronger the present and future generations uphold this spirit, the more developed and powerful the nation will become. The national flag, he said, is a matter of pride and carries the memories of the sacrifices made by freedom fighters.
The Chief Minister said India is moving towards the goal of building a Viksit Bharat under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Tripura is also steadily progressing on the path of development, he added, stressing that states must become developed in order to build a developed India.
Speaking as the Guest of Honour, SMCC Chairman Nabendu Bhattacharya discussed the historical context of the Partition.
Maharaja Bir Bikram University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Bibhas Deb, Director of the Directorate of Higher Education Animesh Debbarma and Teachers’ Council Secretary Dr. Nilima Biswas were also present at the programme.
The welcome address was delivered by Maharaja Bir Bikram College Principal Dr. Arjun Ghosh.
As part of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha also participated in the programme at Maharaja Bir Bikram College.
