Bihar, July 27, 2026: A police constable has been suspended after allegedly opening fire with an AK-47-style rifle during a student protest in Bihar’s Siwan district over the alleged NEET examination paper leak. The incident, which took place on July 25, has triggered widespread concern after videos circulating on social media appeared to show the constable carrying and firing the weapon during the demonstration.
Three people sustained gunshot injuries in the incident and are currently undergoing treatment at Jayprabha Medanta Hospital in Patna. Among them is 15-year-old Md Arif, who reportedly underwent surgery to have the bullet removed. Hospital sources said all three injured persons are in stable condition.
Siwan Superintendent of Police Puran Kumar Jha confirmed that Constable Abhishek Patel, attached to the District Intelligence Unit, has been placed under immediate suspension. A departmental inquiry has also been ordered to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged use of the firearm during the protest.
The incident has sparked sharp political reactions, with opposition leaders demanding an independent and transparent investigation into the police action. They have questioned the use of force during the demonstration and called for accountability if any misconduct is established.
Authorities are continuing their investigation, while the viral videos and eyewitness accounts remain under scrutiny as part of the ongoing inquiry.
