New Delhi, 24 July 2026: Social activist Sonam Wangchuk on Friday ended his hunger strike at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a series of measures aimed at tackling paper leak cases across the country. The announcement was made in the presence of Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Dr. Jitendra Singh.
Addressing the issue, Prime Minister Modi said paper leaks are not an ordinary matter but a deeply painful experience for lakhs of students and their families. He emphasized that the government has taken multiple steps over the past two and a half months to deal with the crisis, including arresting those responsible for the leaks.
“The culprits have been caught and are in jail,” the Prime Minister said, adding that the government’s top priority was to ensure students did not lose an academic year because of the incidents.
According to the Prime Minister, the government successfully conducted fresh examinations for nearly 22 lakh students in a short period and recently declared the results, allowing students to continue their academic journey without further delay.
However, Modi said the government is not satisfied with merely conducting re-examinations. To prevent such incidents in the future, he announced that a draft proposal has been prepared to establish Fast-Track Courts and introduce stricter legal provisions for those involved in paper leak cases.
He informed that the draft will be discussed in the Union Cabinet, finalized after incorporating suggestions from ministers, and a Bill will be introduced in Parliament during the ongoing session with the aim of securing its passage at the earliest.
Following the Prime Minister’s announcement and assurance of swift legal reforms, Sonam Wangchuk ended his hunger strike at Medanta Hospital. The move is being viewed as a significant development in the government’s response to the growing concerns over examination integrity and student welfare.
The proposed legislation is expected to strengthen the legal framework against examination-related fraud and ensure faster justice in paper leak cases, an issue that has affected millions of students across the country.
