Tripura, July 22: The Kailashahar District Congress on Wednesday staged a demonstration and gherao of the Kailashahar Police Station to protest the alleged police action against students participating in a protest in Delhi and the detention of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi along with several opposition leaders.
The protest was led by Kailashahar MLA Birajit Sinha and District Congress President Badruzzaman, along with party leaders and workers. Demonstrators raised slogans against the Central Government and demanded protection of students’ democratic right to protest.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Birajit Sinha alleged that students were subjected to a police lathi-charge during their protest at Jantar Mantar. He claimed that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and several senior party leaders were forcibly taken into police custody while demonstrating near the Prime Minister’s residence in support of the students.
Sinha said peaceful protests are a constitutional right in a democratic country and accused the Centre of suppressing dissent. He also alleged that repeated examination paper leaks had triggered widespread anger among students and youth across the country. Referring to demands for the resignation of the Union Education Minister, he said the Congress supports those demands and accused the government of failing to address concerns over examination irregularities.
The MLA further called for an impartial probe into the recent death of Tripura Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar. He questioned the circumstances surrounding the incident and said the state government should disclose the facts transparently. Sinha demanded a neutral investigation under the supervision of a High Court judge, stating that the people of Tripura and the country deserve clarity on the matter.
The protest created a brief tense situation near the police station, but police personnel managed the situation and maintained law and order without any major incident.
The District Congress reiterated its appeal to the government to seriously consider the demands raised by the protesting students and safeguard democratic values.
