Agartala, July 17: A 36-year-old mentally ill man succumbed to his injuries after allegedly being brutally assaulted by a mob in Tripura’s Amtali area, prompting his family to demand a fair investigation and stringent action against those responsible.
The deceased has been identified as Gobinda Das, son of Rabindra Das and a resident of the Kalimata Sangha area near Agartala Railway Station. He died on Friday night while undergoing treatment at the Trauma Care Centre of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital.
According to family members, Gobinda was brought home by personnel from Amtali Police Station on Tuesday after being rescued from an alleged mob attack in the Kathaltali-Ranirkhamar area. Police reportedly informed the family that he had been assaulted by a group of people before being rescued.
When Gobinda was brought home, his relatives noticed multiple serious injuries on different parts of his body. The following day, with the assistance of local residents, he was admitted to GBP Hospital for treatment. Despite doctors’ efforts, he succumbed to his injuries after battling for several days.
The family said Gobinda had been suffering from mental health issues since 2014, when he underwent brain surgery following a severe head injury sustained in a road accident. They claimed he was mentally unstable and incapable of posing a threat to anyone.
Alleging that the incident was not a spontaneous assault but a planned and brutal killing, the family demanded that all those involved be identified without delay and brought to justice. They have called for an impartial investigation into the incident and exemplary punishment for the accused.
“We want a transparent investigation so that the truth comes out and those responsible are punished according to law,” a family member said.
Police have registered a specific case at Amtali Police Station in connection with the incident. Officials said an investigation is underway to identify the persons involved in the alleged assault.
The incident has sparked concern over incidents of mob violence and the vulnerability of persons suffering from mental illness, with local residents and rights activists urging authorities to ensure a fair probe and accountability for those responsible.
