Agartala, July 14: The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has launched a special initiative to restore and beautify the historic Prabhu Bari pond, aiming to preserve one of the city’s important heritage water bodies while enhancing its ecological and aesthetic value.
As part of the initiative, Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder on Tuesday visited the site to review the progress of the renovation work. During the inspection, he expressed dissatisfaction over the slow pace of the project and directed officials and engineers to expedite the work and ensure its completion within the stipulated timeframe.
The Mayor was accompanied by Ward No. 20 Corporator Ratna Dutta, senior officials of the Agartala Municipal Corporation, engineers and local representatives, who reviewed various aspects of the restoration project.
Speaking during the inspection, Majumder said the preservation and beautification of Agartala’s traditional ponds remains one of the civic body’s top priorities. He noted that these historic water bodies are not only an integral part of the city’s cultural heritage but also play a vital role in maintaining the urban ecosystem and improving the quality of life for residents.
According to municipal officials, the restoration plan includes cleaning and desilting the pond, repairing damaged structures, improving embankments, and carrying out landscaping and aesthetic enhancements around the water body. The objective is to make the pond environmentally sustainable while creating a cleaner and more attractive public space for residents and visitors.
Officials said the project is part of the corporation’s broader efforts to conserve heritage assets and improve urban infrastructure across the city.
Local residents welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that the restored pond would once again become a prominent landmark and recreational space. They also appreciated the civic body’s efforts to preserve Agartala’s historical identity while improving the city’s environment.
The Agartala Municipal Corporation has been undertaking several beautification and infrastructure development projects in recent months as part of its vision to create a cleaner, greener and more sustainable city. The restoration of Prabhu Bari pond is expected to contribute significantly to that objective by protecting a valuable heritage site and improving the surrounding urban landscape.
