Tripura, July 10: Four suspected Bangladeshi nationals were detained by plainclothes police personnel from the Radhanagar Bus Stand area in Khowai on Friday afternoon following a tip-off, police said.
According to Khowai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Krishna Dhan Sarkar, the police received specific intelligence between 1:00 pm and 1:30 pm about four individuals moving suspiciously in the Khowai Motor Stand area. Acting swiftly, a joint team comprising the district civil team and Khowai Police, led by SI Madhusudan Sarkar, reached the spot and detained the four individuals for questioning.
During interrogation, the detainees reportedly disclosed that they were Bangladeshi nationals. Police said one of them identified himself as Shamshul Haque, while the others also revealed their identities. Preliminary inquiry indicates that all four are residents of Chapai Nawabganj district in Bangladesh.
The four individuals have been taken into custody at Khowai Police Station, where further investigation is underway. Police said other security and intelligence agencies will also participate in the investigation to determine how and through which route they allegedly entered India.
“The investigation is in progress, and further details will be shared after verification,” the Officer-in-Charge said.
The incident has sparked discussion among local residents over border security and illegal infiltration in the border areas of Khowai subdivision. Some residents alleged that illegal crossings from Bangladesh occur from time to time through vulnerable stretches of the border and expressed concern that many infiltrators may evade detection. However, these claims have not been independently verified by authorities.
Locals also alleged that organised networks facilitate the preparation of forged identity documents for illegal entrants after they cross into India. While fake voter ID cards, birth certificates and other forged documents have reportedly been seized in previous operations, police have not confirmed whether any forged documents were recovered from the four detainees in this case.
Police have emphasized that the identities, legal status, and allegations against the detained individuals will be confirmed only after the investigation is completed. Authorities are also probing whether the detainees have links to any larger cross-border infiltration or human trafficking network.
