Tripura, July 5: Khowai Police seized around 40 kilograms of cannabis and arrested one alleged drug smuggler during a special operation at the Kargil Tilla area under Khowai Police Station on Sunday afternoon.
According to police, the operation was carried out around 2:00 PM on the Hatkata road near Kargil Tilla following a tip-off. The contraband was allegedly being transported in a high-speed TR04C-2898 three-wheeler (tomtom) when police intercepted the vehicle.
Officer-in-Charge Krishna Dhan Sarkar of Khowai Police Station said that the seized cannabis is estimated to have a black market value of around ₹6 lakh.
Police said two persons were travelling in the vehicle, but while one suspect was arrested at the spot, the other managed to flee. A search has been launched to trace the absconding accused.
The seized cannabis, the vehicle, and the arrested suspect were taken to Khowai Police Station for further legal proceedings. Police have registered a case and are continuing the investigation to identify others involved in the alleged smuggling network.
The incident has also raised concerns among local residents, with some questioning whether smugglers are increasingly avoiding major highways and using smaller interior roads to evade police surveillance.
