Kumarghat, July4 : A man sustained serious injuries after being allegedly attacked with a sharp machete in a late-night assault at Saydarpara Ward No. 1 under the Fatikroy Assembly constituency in Tripura’s Unakoti district. The victim was first taken to Fatikroy Hospital and later referred to Unakoti District Hospital for advanced treatment. A case has been registered at Fatikroy Police Station, while the accused remains absconding.
According to the victim’s family, the incident stemmed from an argument over political issues on June 30 between Narad Das, younger brother of victim Pradip Das, and local resident Shiprendu Das. Although local residents intervened and defused the situation, tensions allegedly continued.
The family alleged that later that night, Shiprendu Das hid near the cowshed of Pradip Das’s house armed with a sharp machete. At around 1 a.m. (July 2), when Pradip Das was returning from the toilet, he was allegedly ambushed and attacked repeatedly. He suffered multiple injuries to his neck, back and the left side of his chest before collapsing in a pool of blood.
Hearing his screams, family members rushed to the spot, prompting the accused to flee, allegedly leaving the weapon behind. Police from Fatikroy Police Station reached the scene, rescued the injured man, seized the machete and launched an investigation.
Doctors at Fatikroy Hospital reportedly stitched around 20 wounds on the victim. As his condition deteriorated, he was referred to Unakoti District Hospital on July 1, where he is currently undergoing treatment, including CT scan and X-ray examinations.
The victim’s wife, Gitanjali Biswas (Das), said she filed a formal complaint against Shiprendu Das at Fatikroy Police Station on July 1. She further alleged that around two years ago, the accused had stolen ducks from their home and was detained by police before allegedly escaping from the police station. According to the family, the recent attack may have been motivated either by that old dispute or by the political altercation involving Narad Das earlier on June 30.
The family has demanded the immediate arrest of the accused and strict legal action. Police have begun investigating the case, but as of the time of filing this report, the accused had not been arrested. The incident has created tension in the locality.
