Agartala, April 25: A deep wave of grief has swept across Agartala and its surrounding areas following the sudden demise of Jayanta Roy, a familiar face and widely loved street vendor known for his unique “Pocha Achar.”
For years, Roy had been a constant presence across both urban and rural pockets of the city, moving around on his bicycle and selling homemade pickles. His distinctive call and cheerful personality made him a recognizable and cherished figure among locals.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred in the Sidhai Mohanpur area while he was returning from his daughter’s house. Jayanta Roy, along with another pedestrian, sustained serious injuries in a road accident. Both were rescued by locals and taken to Mohanpur Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, Roy was referred to GB Hospital in Agartala, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment today.
Notably, just a day before the accident, Roy was actively engaged in his daily routine—cycling through neighborhoods and selling his signature pickles. Despite the unusual name “Pocha Achar,” his products were widely appreciated for their taste and variety, earning him a loyal customer base over the years.
Known for his simplicity, hard work and warm interaction with people, Roy had built a strong emotional connection with the community. His ever-smiling face and dedication to his work made him more than just a vendorhe became a part of everyday life for many residents.
His untimely death has left his family devastated and created a somber atmosphere in the locality. Though an ordinary man by profession, Jayanta Roy’s sincerity, perseverance, and honesty helped him carve out a lasting identity that will remain etched in public memory for years to come.
The incident once again raises serious concerns over road safety and reckless driving, as yet another life is lost too soon.
