Agartala, Apr 17. The Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) general secretary Swapan Debbarma has resigned from his post, taking moral responsibility for the party’s poor performance in the recently concluded TTAADC elections, where it secured only 17,664 votes despite fielding candidates in 24 seats in indigenous-dominated areas.
In his resignation statement, Debbarma acknowledged the disappointing outcome despite the party’s expectations of winning four to five seats. “The results have been very unsatisfactory,” he said, adding that while voter turnout was comparatively better than the 2023 Assembly elections, it did not translate into electoral success.
He, however, expressed gratitude to party supporters and voters who stood by the party’s core demand for a separate ‘Tipraland’.
Debbarma also alleged technical issues during polling, claiming that the use of old EVM machines led to unexpected problems across polling booths in various constituencies.
Maintaining that “the people’s mandate is final,” he said he has submitted his resignation to the party president through the party office secretary, and the final decision now rests with the leadership.
The IPFT’s performance in the TTAADC polls marks a significant setback for the party in tribal areas, where it has traditionally held influence.
