Tripura, 31 Dec 2025: In a significant step to strengthen and modernise Tripura’s weather forecasting system, the State Government on Tuesday signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The MoUs were signed in the presence of Chief Minister Manik Saha.
The agreements were executed between the State Revenue Department and the PWD (Water Resources) Department on behalf of the Tripura Government, and the India Meteorological Department. The MoUs were formally handed over to IMD Director General Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra by Revenue Secretary Brijesh Pandey and PWD Secretary Kiran Gitte.
The MoU exchange ceremony was held at the Tripura Institution for Transformation (TIFT) office during a courtesy meeting between Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha and the IMD Director General. On the occasion, the Chief Minister presented a commemorative memento to Dr. Mohapatra and officially inaugurated the IMD project.
Several senior officials were present during the programme, including Revenue Secretary Brijesh Pandey, PWD Secretary Kiran Gitte, IMD Regional Director (Northeast) Dr. Samir Kumar Das, and other concerned officers.
As part of the initiative to enhance the state’s weather forecasting infrastructure, the Tripura Government has allotted 0.12 acres of land free of cost to IMD for the installation of a Doppler Weather Radar at Belineema in West Tripura district. Additionally, the responsibility for the operation, maintenance, and data transmission of three automated weather stations under the PWD (Water Resources) Department has been handed over to IMD.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha described the initiative as a timely and forward-looking step. He said the advanced radar system would play a crucial role in agriculture, water resource management, power supply, disaster management, and overall development planning. The Doppler Weather Radar will significantly improve weather forecasting and early warning systems across the state, enabling better preparedness for natural disasters, the Chief Minister added.
