Agartala: Dec 30. Padma Rani Debbarma, a tiprajwk (woman) from Watoilong Para under South Ghilatali Gram Panchayat in Kalyanpur RD Block, has emerged as a successful example of rural self-reliance by turning duck farming into a sustainable livelihood with support from VHAT and NABARD.
With financial and technical assistance under the Tribal Development Fund (TDF) project, implemented by the Voluntary Health Association of Tripura (VHAT) with NABARD’s backing, Padma Rani began her journey last year with 60 ducklings. The project also provided feed support, construction of a safe shelter, and basic training on disease prevention and duck rearing.
Over time, she transformed this initial support into a profitable venture through careful planning and consistent effort. By selling ducks and eggs, reinvesting earnings to expand stock, and maintaining regular production, she has created a steady source of income. Today, duck farming not only supports her family’s daily expenses but also allows her to save for the future.
Speaking to reporters, Padma Rani said the combination of institutional support and personal hard work was key to her success. She admitted that the initial phase was challenging, but experience and guidance helped her overcome obstacles.
Looking ahead, she plans to expand duck farming by better utilizing her water resources, increasing duck numbers, boosting egg production, and improving market linkages to double her income. She also aims to involve other women from the locality to form a small group-based initiative.
Her journey stands as more than an individual success story—it highlights women’s empowerment and livelihood generation in tribal and rural areas. Padma Rani Debbarma’s achievement proves that with the right support and determination, rural women in Tripura can confidently step toward economic independence.
