Agartala: Dec 29. As part of the Charilam Watershed Development Project, 93 women beneficiaries from three gram panchayats North Charilam, South Charilam and Aralia were provided sewing machines on Monday to promote women’s self-employment and financial independence.
The sewing machines were distributed among members of Self Help Groups (SHGs) under the Watershed Development Component (WDC)– Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY) 2.0 scheme. The initiative aims to help rural women generate income and become self-reliant.
The distribution programme was held in front of the Charilam Agriculture Sector Office, where leaders highlighted the broader objectives of the watershed project.
Speaking to the media, Sepahijala Zilla Parishad Saha Sabhadhipati Pintu Aich, Agriculture Standing Committee Chairman Gouranga Bhowmik, and Charilam Agriculture Sector Officer Dingki Jamatia said the project focuses on holistic rural development.
Apart from sewing machines, the watershed project has undertaken several developmental works including drain renovation, pond excavation, and fruit cultivation across the area. Officials said these efforts are aimed at improving livelihoods and strengthening rural infrastructure.
Local women beneficiaries had long demanded sewing machines, which officials said was addressed under the project keeping women empowerment at the core.
