Agartala: Dec 29. In a major breakthrough in Tripura’s ongoing anti-narcotics drive, Melaghar police seized 105 kilograms of dried ganja from the Poangbari area under Melaghar Police Station on Sunday. The main accused managed to flee before the raid and is currently absconding.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Melaghar PS Officer-in-Charge Jayanta Das conducted a raid at the residence of Bipod Nam, brother of a former booth president of Booth No. 51 under the 21 Nalchar Assembly constituency. During the search, police recovered five drums filled with dried ganja from the kitchen, weighing a total of 105 kg.
The operation was carried out with the presence of SI Subir Saha, SI Ram Kishan, TSR personnel, women police staff, and a representative of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, ensuring full procedural compliance.
However, sensing police movement beforehand, the accused fled the house and escaped arrest. A case has been registered against him under the NDPS Act at Melaghar Police Station, and efforts are on to trace him.
Speaking to the media, OC Jayanta Das said police will act swiftly on any credible information related to narcotics and that the anti-drug campaign will be intensified further.
Meanwhile, the incident has sparked questions, as the accused reportedly has political links, raising concerns over how effectively the administration is cracking down on drug networks operating under political cover, despite the state government’s push for a drug-free society.
