Agartala: Dec 27. In a major boost to rural livelihoods, the Voluntary Health Association of Tripura (VHAT), with support from NABARD, has launched the first-ever pig insurance scheme in Khowai district, starting from Kalyanpur block. This pioneering initiative aims to provide financial security to pig-rearing tribal families who depend on livestock for their livelihood.
So far, 90 tribal families in the Kalyanpur block have received support under VHAT’s pig-rearing programme. The initiative includes distribution of pigs, access to veterinary healthcare, and now, insurance coverage in collaboration with the Animal Resources Development Department. Officials confirmed that this is the first instance of pig insurance not only in Kalyanpur but across the entire Khowai district.
Local pig farmers welcomed the move, stating that insurance coverage will significantly reduce risk and provide much-needed protection against losses. VAT officials said the organisation remains committed to implementing diverse programmes to strengthen the socio-economic conditions of rural communities in the coming days.
