Agartala, 26 Dec 2025: The Hon’ble Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Bishwabandhu Sen, passed away today while undergoing treatment in another state, plunging Tripura into deep mourning. His demise has been described as an irreparable loss to the state’s political, legislative, and democratic institutions.
According to official information, on August 9, the Speaker suffered a sudden medical emergency while preparing to travel to Dharmanagar by train. He had arrived at Agartala Railway Station to board his scheduled train when he suddenly collapsed inside the station’s washroom. He was immediately rushed to GBP Hospital, where doctors diagnosed an internal brain haemorrhage and advised immediate surgical intervention.
Chief Minister Manik Saha had then expressed concern, stating, “May God bless him with strength, and I pray for his speedy and complete recovery.” The Chief Minister personally supervised his transfer in the CM’s convoy to ILS Hospital, where advanced treatment arrangements were made. An air ambulance was also kept on standby for emergency purposes.
A major surgery was successfully performed by Dr. Debdatta Saha and Dr. Abir Lal Nath. Following the procedure, leaders, ministers, and MLAs cutting across party lines gathered at the hospital to enquire about the Speaker’s health condition.
Despite continuous medical care and all possible efforts, Bishwabandhu Sen’s condition remained critical. He was later shifted outside the state for further advanced treatment. However, he passed away today while undergoing treatment in another state.
Expressing deep sorrow over his demise, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said he was profoundly shocked by the untimely loss of the Hon’ble Speaker, calling it an irreparable loss for the people of Tripura. He extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members, relatives, and followers, and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and strength for the family to endure this difficult time.
Condolences have been pouring in from across political parties and various sections of society, remembering Bishwabandhu Sen as a dignified leader, an able Speaker, and a committed public servant.
