Agartala, December 24: In a major boost to weather monitoring and disaster preparedness, a high-capacity Doppler Weather Radar will be installed in South Tripura district under an initiative of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The radar will be set up near the South Tripura District Magistrate’s office premises and will have a monitoring range of nearly 100 kilometres, enabling the collection of advanced, real-time weather-related data.
The development was announced by South Tripura District Magistrate Mohammad Sajjad P during a press conference held at the district collectorate conference hall on Tuesday. He informed that around 0.22 acres of land has been earmarked for the installation of this state-of-the-art radar.
According to the District Magistrate, the Doppler radar will help provide early warnings related to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds, and cyclonic conditions, significantly strengthening disaster management and public safety mechanisms in the region.
The press conference was also attended by scientist Partha Ray from the Regional Meteorological Centre of the Central Weather Department, who highlighted the technical importance and benefits of the new radar system for South Tripura and adjoining areas.
