Agartala: Dec 20. Residents of North Hurua village under Dharmanagar sub-division blocked the Dharmanagar-Kalachhara road this morning, protesting a severe and prolonged drinking water crisis that has affected the area for nearly three years.
The agitation took place in Ward No. 7 of North Hurua, where around 200 families have reportedly been deprived of regular access to safe drinking water. Frustrated by repeated assurances and no concrete action, villagers mostly women sat on the road and raised slogans demanding immediate resolution of the crisis, causing temporary disruption of traffic on the busy stretch.
According to local sources, residents had approached the Gram Panchayat and concerned departments multiple times, but no effective steps were taken to address the issue. Left with no alternative, the villagers resorted to road blockade to draw the administration’s attention.
On receiving information, Kalachhara Block BDO Narayan Debnath, DWS SDO of Dharmanagar Sohel Ahmed, and other administrative officials rushed to the spot. After holding discussions with the protestors, the officials assured them of a permanent solution to the drinking water problem at the earliest.
Following the assurance, the protestors withdrew the blockade and normal traffic movement was restored. However, villagers made it clear that mere assurances are no longer acceptable, stressing that only visible and timely implementation will bring real relief.
As residents bluntly stated, where people have no drinking water, promises alone hold no value only action does.
