Tripura, 18 Dec 2025: Political tension in Tripura reportedly began following events linked to a mass joining programme and rally organised by the Janajati Morcha in Agartala on 13 December.
During the rally, Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma delivered a speech in which he allegedly stated that “anyone who challenges BJP will be reduced to ashes.” The remark soon sparked controversy and drew sharp criticism from TIPRA Motha as well as the Leader of the Opposition from the CPI(M), Jitendra Choudhury. The statement triggered strong political reactions across party lines and is believed to have intensified the prevailing tension.
In the aftermath, members and supporters of TIPRA Motha’s youth wing, YTF, allegedly organised a protest march and gathered in front of the minister’s residence in the Uttar Maharani area without prior permission from the police. As the situation turned tense, construction workers present at the site reportedly panicked and were forced to abandon their work and leave the area.
At the same time, allegations surfaced regarding an attack and vandalism at the residence of Rashid Mia, President of the BJP Minority Morcha in Khowai district. Several members of his family were reportedly injured in the incident, leading to widespread anger and condemnation.
In protest against both incidents, the BJP organised a torch rally on Tuesday evening under the initiative of the 29 Krishnapur Mandal. The rally started from the Mandal office at Chakmaghat, passed through the Tui Madhu Bazaar area, and concluded back at the Mandal office.
During the rally, BJP leaders and workers condemned any attempt to disturb law and order. They stated that organising protests without permission and creating unrest outside private residences in the name of democratic protest is unacceptable. The demonstrators demanded swift and strict administrative action against those responsible.
The torch rally was attended by Krishnapur Mandal President Dhananjay Das, Vice President Gopal Das, along with other Mandal leaders and a large number of party workers. The programme concluded with a collective appeal to maintain peace, public safety, and the rule of law.
