Agartala: Dec 15. In a major anti-narcotics breakthrough, North District Police on Monday seized 44,000 Yaba tablets worth approximately ₹2.5 crore and arrested three women near Dharmanagar Railway Station, acting on specific intelligence inputs.
According to North District SP Avinash Rai, the operation was carried out by Dharmanagar Police following a tip-off from the intelligence wing. The accused were intercepted while allegedly attempting to traffic the contraband using a Silchar-Agartala passenger train.
The arrested women have been identified as: Mafia Begum (45), wife of late Renu Mia, resident of Hospital Road, Sonamura, Sepahijala district; Ankuri Bibi (40), wife of Md. Rashid Mia, resident of Shilghati, Kakraban police station area, Gomati district; Hafia Begum (55), wife of Muslem Mia, resident of Kakraban police station area, Gomati district.
A preliminary investigation suggests that the accused planned to disembark at Dharmanagar and switch from rail to road routes to transport the drugs to their respective destinations. However, swift police action foiled the attempt.
The seized Yaba tablets were recovered from the possession of the accused, and all three have been taken to Dharmanagar Police Station for interrogation. Police officials stated that further questioning and investigation are underway to identify other members of the drug trafficking network involved.
Senior police officials, including the Superintendent of Police, Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Dharmanagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Meena Debbarma, DCM, and other law enforcement personnel were present during the operation.
The successful seizure has been widely welcomed by residents of Dharmanagar and the entire North District, who have praised the police for their continued crackdown against drug trafficking.
