Agartala: Dec 10. The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) today announced it will observe state-wide Black Day observations tomorrow, marking the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019, a law the body continues to call ‘draconian’ and imposed despite massive opposition.
NESO, which includes the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF), All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Garo Students’ Union (GSU) and All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU), said that black flags and black banners will be displayed in all important locations across the seven Northeastern states.
The organisation reminded the public that on 11 December 2019, the Government of India pushed ahead with the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019 in the Rajya Sabha, ignoring the “relentless opposition” of the indigenous peoples of the Northeast.
NESO said the Black Day observance is meant not only to signal continued resistance to the Act but also to remind present and future generations of what it calls “yet another political injustice” committed against the indigenous communities of the region.
The body has appealed to all people of the Northeast to support the observation and continue the struggle for what it described as a “just cause and a God-given right.”
The statement was issued by NESO Chairman Samuel B. Jyrwa and Secretary General Mutsikhoyo Yhobu on December 10.
