Tripura, 08 Dec 2025: A major accident was narrowly averted in Shantinagar Bazar under Durgapur Gram Panchayat today after a large branch of an old banyan tree suddenly collapsed, completely destroying a ration shop. Ration dealer Umapada Das narrowly escaped with his life.
According to local sources, ration distribution was underway when a heavy branch of the decades-old banyan tree suddenly snapped and crashed through the shop’s roof. Hearing the loud crash and the dealer’s cries for help, locals rushed to the spot and managed to rescue him after considerable effort. A nearby tea stall was also severely damaged in the incident, spreading panic across the area.
Residents alleged that the banyan tree had long posed a danger, with several branches showing signs of weakening. Despite multiple complaints to the Kalyanpur Forest Department, no preventive action was taken. Locals have blamed the negligence of the Forest Department for today’s accident.
Meanwhile, angry residents have demanded immediate compensation for the affected shopkeepers. The role and inaction of the Forest Department has come under sharp public scrutiny following the incident.
