Agartala, Dec 02: Tripura Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Monday pushed for rapid modernization in farming, stressing that self-reliant agriculture is essential to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of India as a global grain hub.
At a programme held under the Mohanpur Agriculture Sub-Division, the Minister distributed modern equipment, including spray machines and tree saplings, to local farmers. Officials said the initiative aims to boost production and encourage efficient cultivation practices.

Nath said Tripura must strengthen its own food security. “Districts cannot depend on each other for basics like rice. Every block has to become self-sufficient,” he remarked, urging farmers to maximize output through new technologies.
He added that Tripura is now successfully cultivating both red and white onions—once thought impossible. The state is giving special focus to rice, onion, potato and pulses to ensure food stability.
The Minister also highlighted India’s growing agri-exports, including fish to the USA, Europe and Japan, and eggs to Middle Eastern and South Asian countries.
