Agartala: Dec 02. A Special Court in Sribhumi (District & Sessions Court) has handed 12 years of rigorous imprisonment to two men from Sepahijala district after finding them guilty of trafficking 404 kg of ganja on Monday. Judge Abu Saleh Badruzza Laskar also imposed a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh each, with an additional six months’ imprisonment if they fail to pay.
The convicted persons are: Sujan Mia (25), resident of Sonamura, Sepahijala; Imdadul Haque (28), resident of Sonapur village, Sonamura, Sepahijala.
According to case records, the incident dates back to 11 November 2022. Around 11:30 pm, a truck bearing registration no- TR 01 B 1747 from Tripura reached the Churaibari Watch Post under Assam’s Bazari Cherra Police Station. During a routine search, police recovered 69 packets of ganja weighing 404 kg from the truck’s hood. Both the driver and the helper were immediately detained.
A case was registered under NDPS Act sections 20(b)(ii)(C)/25/29, and the accused were sent to judicial custody on court orders.
Government lawyer Mukundlal Kairi informed the media that all charges were proven during trial. Six witnesses were examined. However, the truck owner was acquitted due to lack of evidence.
Senior advocate Bidhan Bhattacharjee represented the defence.
