Agartala, Dec 1: Building an AIDS-free society is not possible solely through government schemes or administrative efforts; every individual must remain aware and responsible, said Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha. He was speaking on Monday at the state-level observance of World AIDS Day, organised at the Swami Vivekananda Ground by the Tripura State AIDS Control Society.
Inaugurating the programme, the Chief Minister said that no person can be considered completely healthy while carrying the HIV virus. “Medical science has advanced, and individuals can now live many years with proper treatment, but a healthy society cannot be built if awareness is absent,” he said. He added that HIV infection often spreads through unsafe behaviour and lack of awareness.

Sharing statistics, the Chief Minister informed that more than 14,000 people in Tripura have tested HIV-positive, and over 3,000 have died since 1999. However, the number of new infections has declined significantly due to aggressive awareness campaigns and improved treatment facilities. He acknowledged the relentless work of health workers, NGOs and volunteers who contributed to this progress.
At the event, the Chief Minister launched three community-run health camps across West Tripura, Gomati and Dhalai districts. He also inaugurated 26 ART centres and an HIV diagnostic testing facility.
Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, speaking as the special guest, said that due to consistent efforts by the Centre and the State, the number of AIDS-affected individuals has reduced significantly. Tripura University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Ganga Prasad Prasain and other dignitaries highlighted the role of students and youth in spreading awareness.
During the programme, the Chief Minister honoured several organisations and individuals for their outstanding work in AIDS awareness and community health initiatives.
The event concluded with cultural performances and awareness campaigns aimed at encouraging people to adopt safe practices and eliminate stigma around HIV.
