Agartala: Nov 12. In a proud moment for Tripura, Sepahijala district has clinched the Best District Award at the 6th National Water Awards 2024, emerging as the only district from the Northeast to earn the prestigious national honour for excellence in water conservation and management.
The announcement came from Union Jal Shakti Minister Chandrakant Raghunath Patil during a press briefing held at Shram Shakti Bhawan, New Delhi, earlier Tuesday. The awards were declared by the Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation under the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
Officials credited Sepahijala’s achievement to its innovative water management initiatives that have significantly improved water availability and quality, driven by strong community participation and local governance. The district’s model is now being viewed as a benchmark for sustainable water conservation in the Northeast.
This year’s awards recognised 46 winners across 10 categories, including Best State, Best Urban Local Body, Best Panchayat, Best Institution, and Best Individual, among others.
Each awardee will receive a citation, trophy, and cash prize (in select categories) during the award ceremony scheduled on November 18 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, where President Droupadi Murmu will grace the event as the Chief Guest.
Sepahijala’s win, officials said, highlights Tripura’s growing commitment to water sustainability, marking a major milestone for the state and the entire Northeastern region.
