Agartala, October 11: Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha yesterday inaugurated the Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) College Lake Revitalization Project, marking a major step in Agartala’s transformation into a Smart City and Tripura’s progress toward becoming a Smart State. The Chief Minister unveiled the plaque and planted a sapling in the Science Building premises of MBB College.
Speaking at the inauguration, Dr. Saha said the state government is working with transparency and dedication to ensure the holistic development of Agartala, including upgrading its drainage systems, link roads, and housing infrastructure under the Light House Project. He also announced that plans are underway to construct another flyover in Agartala.

The CM highlighted that for decades, the MBB College Lake area had become a hub for antisocial activities, but the present government has transformed it into a tourist and recreational zone through multiple development initiatives. The project, spread over 31 acres, includes the planting of nearly 70,000 trees of various species, the construction of a pontoon bridge, and facilities such as a cafeteria, open gym, children’s play area, sculptures, food court, fountain plaza, and yoga center.
He emphasized that this rejuvenated lake area will now serve as a recreational and cultural hub for citizens of all ages—an ideal place for morning walkers, children, and students alike. Dr. Saha added that the state government, following the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is committed to placing Tripura on the path of growth and modernization. “The government alone cannot build a prosperous Tripura; we need the cooperation of all citizens,” he appealed.
Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor and MLA Deepak Majumder, attending as the guest of honour, spoke about the various development works carried out under the beautification project. He noted that 17 new pump machines have been installed to improve Agartala’s drainage system.
MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, present as a special guest, said that the beautification of the MBB College Lake is part of the government’s larger effort to reshape and modernize Tripura, while also enhancing its tourism infrastructure.
Urban Development Secretary Abhishek Singh and Agartala Smart City Limited CEO Dr. Shailesh Yadav also addressed the gathering. The event was attended by Deputy Mayor Monika Das Dutta, AMC East Zone Chairman Sukhmay Saha, Advocate General Shaktimoy Chakraborty, AMC CEO Dilip Kumar Chakma, and Advisory Committee Chairman Dr. Dilip Das, among others.
After the inauguration, the Chief Minister and other dignitaries toured the newly developed lake area. The total cost of the project amounts to ₹33 crore.
