Agartala, Sept 21: The Gomati Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd. on Sunday expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for exempting GST on dairy products and reducing taxes on ghee. The announcement was made at a press conference held at Agartala Dairy, Indranagar, in the presence of the Chairman Ratan Gosh and other officials.
The Chairman highlighted that the GST on dairy products has been completely waived, while GST on Gomati Ghee has been reduced from 12% to 5%. He said this move will directly benefit thousands of farmers and consumers in Tripura.
Sharing the progress of Gomati Dairy, he informed:
- Earlier the dairy processed 5,000 litres of milk per day, which has now expanded into a 40,000-litre plant.
- At present, around 30,000 litres of milk are marketed daily, while another 10,000 litres are used to make paneer and ice cream.
- The cooperative now works with over 6,200 farmers (earlier 6,000) through 179 milk societies, and is targeting to cross 10,000 farmers by December 2025 with 45 new societies.
- Farmers are supplied cattle feed at ₹26 per kg, much lower than the market rate of ₹36–38.
Gomati Dairy produces four varieties of milk, two varieties of curd, two types of paneer, eight ice cream varieties, bottled water, and as many as 73 types of sweets, along with snacks like coconut laddoo, sesame laddoo, nimki, jirabi, and shingara.
The dairy also supplies milk to GB Pant Hospital and IGM Hospital, while fat removed from milk is used to produce ghee for wider consumption.
Ahead of the festive season, Gomati Dairy will open parlours in 10 puja clubs and has introduced a new vehicle and 11 tomtoms to improve last-mile delivery. Its products are also available at 15 ration shops across Tripura.
The Chairman also announced revised consumer-friendly rates for ghee after the GST reduction:
- 100 gm pack – from ₹120 to ₹110
- 200 gm pack – from ₹220 to ₹200
- 500 gm pack – from ₹450 to ₹420
- 1 litre pack – from ₹900 to ₹840

The cooperative has received support from the Animal Resources Development Department (ARDD), with an investment of about ₹2 crore to strengthen its units at Bamutia Unit II, Indranagar, Kamalpur, Dharmanagar, and other centres through projects like Kata Trust, Tridha, and Uttarayan.
Thanking the Prime Minister, the Chairman said, “The exemption of GST on dairy products is a landmark decision that will help farmers, consumers, and the cooperative movement of Tripura. We dedicate our efforts to contribute towards a stronger, self-reliant India under the leadership of Modi ji.”
